The McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet, officially the CF-188, is the Royal Canadian Air Force variant of the American F/A-18 Hornet. The F/A-18 won the New Fighter Aircraft Project in 1980 to replace the CF-104 Starfighter, CF-101 Voodoo and CF-116 Freedom Fighter, and deliveries to the Canadian Armed Forces began in 1982. The order covered 98 single-seat and 40 dual-seat aircraft, 138 in all. CF-18s have flown air sovereignty patrols for NORAD and took part in combat in the 1991 Gulf War, the Kosovo War, the 2011 Libyan no-fly zone and Operation Impact against ISIL. A replacement by the Lockheed Martin F-35 has been under consideration since 1997.
