The Sukhoi Su-33, NATO reporting name Flanker-D, is an all-weather, carrier-based, twin-engine air superiority and multirole fighter derived from the Su-27 and first known as the Su-27K. To suit carrier operations it has a strengthened undercarriage and airframe, larger folding wings and stabilators, canards, upgraded engines and a twin nose wheel. The first Su-27K prototype made its maiden flight on 17 August 1987. The type first operated at sea in 1995 aboard the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and officially entered service on 31 August 1998 under the Su-33 designation. After the Soviet Union broke up and the Russian Navy shrank, only 24 were produced, attempted sales to China and India failed, and in 2009 the navy ordered the MiG-29K as its replacement.
