The Sukhoi Su-30, NATO reporting names Flanker-C, G and H, is a twin-engine, two-seat supermaneuverable multirole fighter of the Su-27 family, meant for all-weather air-to-air and interdiction missions. It began as an internal Sukhoi project that took the Su-27UB two-seat trainer as the basis for the Su-27PU interceptor, which the Russian Defence Ministry renamed Su-30 in 1996; a proof-of-concept demonstrator flew on 6 June 1987. Different export requirements later split the type into two branches built by competing organisations, KnAAPO's Su-30MKK and Su-30MK2 for China and other buyers, and Irkut's Su-30MKI for India. The Russian Aerospace Forces were reported to have 130 Su-30SMs in operation as of 2024.
