North American FJ-4 Fury

Military Aircraft

The North American FJ-4 Fury was the last and most changed of the Navy and Marine Corps Furies descended from the F-86 Sabre. It kept the general layout and the Wright J65 engine of the FJ-3 but had a new, much thinner wing of six percent thickness with integral fuel tanks, a deeper fuselage with a razorback rear deck, new tail surfaces and reworked main landing gear. It carried half as much fuel again as the FJ-3, intended as an all-weather interceptor with long range. The first FJ-4 flew on 28 October 1954 and deliveries began in February 1955. The later FJ-4B ground-attack version had six underwing stations and could carry a nuclear weapon, equipping ten Navy and three Marine squadrons. Two FJ-4F aircraft with an auxiliary rocket motor reached Mach 1.41. In 1962 the type was redesignated F-1E.
