The North American F-100 Super Sabre is an American supersonic jet fighter designed and produced by North American Aviation. The first of the Century Series of American jet fighters, it was the first United States Air Force fighter capable of supersonic speed in level flight. It was envisioned in the late 1940s as a higher performance successor to the F-86 Sabre, first offered to the Air Force as an unsolicited proposal in January 1951. The first YF-100A flew in May 1953, seven months ahead of schedule, and the F-100A entered service in September 1954. Yaw instability and inertia coupling caused fatal accidents and a short grounding. The fighter-bomber F-100C and the more capable F-100D followed, along with a two-seat F-100F supersonic trainer.
