Grumman F11F-1F Super Tiger

Supersonic and Experimental Aircraft

The Grumman F11F-1F Super Tiger, company designation G-98J, was a single-seat fighter developed for the United States Navy from the F11F-1 Tiger. It came from a 1955 study of fitting the new General Electric J79 engine into the Tiger airframe, and the Navy authorized the modification of two production F11F-1s with enlarged air intakes and YJ79 turbojets. The first flight was on 25 May 1956, and after wing root fillets, a short fuselage extension and an uprated engine the aircraft reached Mach 2.04 in 1957, the first naval aircraft to exceed Mach 2. It also set a world altitude record in 1958. The Navy never ordered it into production, and Grumman failed to sell it to Switzerland, Germany, Japan or Canada, who chose other aircraft.
